Team Texas News
We had our first 2014 T.G.A Team Managers Webinar Meeting this past Saturday, and Shout Out to Bill Ryan, CEO of the Transplant Games of America who had so many wonderful things to tell the other managers about the great state of Texas and our 2014 Host City of Houston. More information was given than I can type here today but here's some news to share. Opening Ceremonies in the BBVA Compass Stadium, A beautiful new stadium near downtown that holds 22,000. Also the home field of our professional soccer team, the Houston Dynamo. Sports venues include but are not limited to The George R. Brown Convention Center, a 1,800,000 sq ft massive air conditioned facility, that can room basketball, volleyball, table tennis, quilt pinning and displays, and much much more. Rice University for track and field and more. Palace Bowling lanes, for the Donor/recipient event and athletic competition. Memorial Park Golf Course, where Babe Didrikson, Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer have played, and 60,000 patrons visit annually. Several Hotels in and around the downtown area have been signed to handle the great crowds of people that will be traveling from all corners of Texas and the rest of the country of course. Many teams have already announced that they expect their teams to double in size compared to the numbers that traveled to Grand Rapids in 2012.
I also want to inform you that some new "non-strenuous" activities will be added to these 2014 games. I would rather wait until the T.G.A. web site is updated so I do not give out information that is incorrect, but I will mention ballroom dancing and Texas-Hold-em were mentioned as such events. Of course their will be more. This is absolute proof that these games are made for everyone that has received a transplant, even those who have slowed down a bit.
I also attended a meeting with committees and sub-committees and members of the T.G.A. and members of the Harris County Houston Sports Authority today to discuss where we stand to date. It's truly unbelievable how fast these people move. Bill Ryan again spoke of the importance of the Donor Families and the importance of their involvement and participation in these games. The Donor recognition Ceremony will be held in The Wortham Center, a beautiful facility that holds over 3000 people. The Quarter Century Club will have an event at the Downtown Aquarium.
